Chapter 11

The trip out to the quarry for ore is as tense as I could have expected. Kianna and Amber are terse, barely talking to me.
âYou wait here,â Kianna tells me.
âSheâs not supposed to ever be in a craft unattended,â Amber reminds her.
âRight. Follow me, then.â Kianna rolls her eyes. We step out of the craft into a field of blowing grass. The woods are miles away, the trees dark and twisted into a smudge on the horizon, foreboding. But the sun is bright and hot, the breeze brisk, and the stones of the quarry sparkle.
âThisââAmber points, as if sheâd rather not tell me anythingââis our best place to gather the ore we need for the magnetic parts. Itâs really just scattered on the surface and is easy to get.â She jogs over and puts on a pair of heavy gloves. She calls back, âYou two bring the canisters.â
âIt seems like a waste of your time, though, to have to gather your own supplies.â I do it myself on Jesel out of necessity, but here the division of labor is more elegant.
Kianna shrugs. âEveryone needs a diversion from time to time. I like getting out here, anyway. Itâs pretty.â
She stands with her hands on her hips surveying the area.
Sheâs right; although itâs desolate in a way, itâs open, the grass extending for miles, swaying and moving like waves in a sea. Flocks of birds. The forest is a dark stain on the horizon, like an anchor.
âReminds me ofâ¦â She breaks off.
âOf what?â
âA place I used to live.â Her eyes are distant when I look to her face. I think sheâs remembering a being more than a location. And now I see how hungry she is for whatever it is that she sees, and itâs not the grass and the trees. Itâs something far away.
âBefore you came here?â
âObviously, yes.â She scoffs. âYour grasp of the mundane is truly admirable.â
âDo you miss it?â Iâm curious about her so I keep my voice soft.
âIâm happy here.â She turns to me. Scowls, face taut. âJust because I have some good memories doesnât mean Iâm not fully satisfied in this place.â
âI didnât imply that you were dissatisfied.â I shrug.
âYou imply that we should be, though, every time you look at me.â Her voice rises.
âWhat do you mean?â I frown.
âYou act like youâre better. Like you have a worthy goal, youâre a real human, and weâre just little robot slaves. Well, let me tell you something.â She pokes a finger at my chest, actually stabbing it into my sternum. âWhat we do here is not easy, and itâs no small feat. And if you canât get on board, we donât want you. Get it?â
âWhen have I ever implied anything?â I raise both hands, perplexed.
âEvery time you look at me!â She shouts, then turns away. âWith your accusing eyes. Mother Earth.â
âI do not.â What the hell? Sheâs not wrong that I think about my goals. But how can she not see how open I am
